A personal insight on what literature means for me.
Literature, what is Literature? According to Rebecca West, “Literature must be an analysis of experience and a synthesis of the findings into a unity”, which also translates to an imaginative and/or creative writing, especially of recognized value. I believe Literature in my terms is the written or creative output of our imaginative minds. These may or may not affect the lives of other people but in itself has its own unique qualities.
For me as an individual, literature represents an important aspect of my life. Some of my beliefs are based on some written works of my favorite authors and they represent the ideas I now implement on my life. Also I believe that most of what I have learned in life, I learned through Literature. I learned not to discriminate and judge other people just because their different from me and I learned to value myself for what I am because I am a unique individual and that there is no one else exactly like me.
Would you believe that most of our written laws were based on the aftereffects of the literature outbreak? Great writers spread their opinions and thoughts of how unfair and unjust the system of society was through their written works. The great writers helped in the shaping of our society through the use of literature. Up until now, literature has the power to affect the written laws of our government and judicial system.
Also literature affects how society looks upon itself. Discrimination and prejudice became one of the world’s biggest problems during the early 1900s. With the help of literature, discrimination and prejudice was lessened and the perspectives of society was put into right again.
After all I have stated, I believe Literature indeed has value for me as an individual and the society as a whole. Literature has endured throughout the ages and up until now touches every aspect of our lives.
