My thoughts on crimes that may have never been committed if the economy was in better shape.

Is the falling economy causing good people to commit stupid crimes? I believe it is. I’m not going to mention any names or even the towns any of this took place, but I have heard of some crazy things happening recently. I read in the news that a guy was arrested for counterfetting. This is not a guy that is always in trouble, but a factory worker that was laid off the weekend before Christmas. He was not trying to make millions, but just trying to get enough money to get by for the week. He is being charged with a class d felony. Now I don’t this man, but I’m willing to bet that if he had not been laid off and the economy wasn’t as bad as it is; that man would have never even thought of something as crazy as this. Don’t get me wrong, He should not have done it. However, in my eyes, he was simply doing what he had to do. In another case I heard of a man that stole a 2lb package of hamburger. There is only one reason that I can think of for stealing hamburger. His family is hungry and he had nothing to feed them. In this particular case the judge felt the same way. He was made to pay for the meat along with fines and court cost. I’m not real sure what’s going to happen if things don’t start looking up for the economy. Can President Obama really fix things like he is promising, or are people going to continue to doubt the government more and more until everything crashes into a big mess of confusion and disorder. I hope things can get back on track so that more people are not driven to do such petty crimes just to survive. But until it happens’ I can say with confidence that things like this will continue to take place.

I agree with you that stupid crimes will increase until the economy gets better. The ironic thing about this, is that by putting people in prison for committing desperate crimes, cost the taxpayers a hundred times more than it would if we simply helped these people in the first place.
