My sister’s own thoughts.
I feel the “ideal” body image does underlie your self-image. I feel this because no one is ever satisfied with how they look. They are always trying some new way to perfect themselves. I read this in “You Can’t be Thin Enough: Body Images and The Mass Media.
I felt he ideal body is directed towards woman and men both equally. I based it off of some TV shows I have watched. “America’s Next Top Model” and “The Pick Up Artist” being some of them. The shows both show the insecurities of both men and woman.
I’ve observed that the ideal body image for a male is muscular and toned. Girls don’t like them to muscular but they like them to have nice biceps and at least a six-pack. I observed this by talking to other people and watching the show E: Best Bodies.
I also feel that it is not so much advertising that creates problems for woman. I feel that a lot of women want to look like the celebrities they see on TV. Even though those actors get in shape healthy and with professional trainers people who cannot afford that will go to desperate lengths to be thin. They feel that if everyone loves how these people look on TV everyone will love how they look if they are thin just like them. Therefore, people will do anything to look that thin whether it be eating disorders, or not dieting and losing weight the right way to get there.
I’ve watched a lot of stuff about this on the Tyra Banks Show. There was an episode that featured a girl who had an eating disorder and was addicted to cocaine to be thin. She stated that she would rather die than be fat. After observing this I realized that body image is a big situation in the world. The pressure to conform to what other people want to see makes people make irrational decisions. I feel that whether you are skinny or fat everyone is beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in his or her own way. No one should worry about how they look.
