Hi i have been at uni for a year and a few months now. I am following my dream of becoming a nurse its all I’ve ever know, i started working in care home at 15 and have worked in many different homes through out the years. The older i got and the more responsibility that was put upon me i realised that the time to move up the ladder was now or never, don’t get me wrong being a carer isn’t easy first you have people who have no caring nature whats so ever. I have seen numbers of abuse towards the elderly but who listens to a carer, were the ones that do most of the work and get the flack when someone goes wrong even the nurses who in my opinion don’t have the energy or the will to work in mainstream care have given up and resorted to working in a slow paced job. Its easy money pop out a few pills clean a few back sides and hey presto a decent wage at the end of the month. Carers on the other hand feed clean and take care of these people believe me there is nothing worse than walking into a shift and seeing a 80 year old women who has worked all her life  and is now covered in urine and faeces because the shift before don’t care because its 10 Min’s before there shift ends.

Well for me i really had enough i am one person but as a nurse i really thought i could make a difference. Its not that easy first i went from 1100 a month working for a nursing agency down to 521 a month on a student bursery, exams and deadlines for essays and hardly any practical experience you get two hours on how to give a potently life saving injection but a 4 hour lecture on  the ethics and consequences of getting drunk on a night out and getting lifted by the police. Student life as a mature student sucks you get no finical help so you have to hold down a full time job study at every waking free moment look after a family and a partner. You get no thanks for the effort your putting in and whats at the end of it maybe you wont get a job as they cant guarantee a job,  so 3 years of study no money no confidence no will left to do the job, then  they ask why is nursing students dropping out.  Come on it doesn’t take much to see why students drop out it isn’t the work because the girls and guys in my class are happy when there up to there neck in it practically, not acedemicly. There told that they must have 100% attendance so people are coming in with chest infections sprain ankles one girls dad died but she had to make up the two weeks she took off because it doesn’t matter if your love one dies you must have 100 % attendance. Do they not see that every student has a life and that anything can happen in your 3 years of study. The bursary, come on rent is 300 travel to uni is 140 gas and electric 40 and that doesnt include food books equipment. The bursary was based on a health care workers wage which was 6000 well that was years ago a health care workers wage is 15 000 but they haven’t put the bursary up so at the end of it all tell me is my dream of being a nurse worth the hassle or it is a blind mans dream because to be honest i really don’t know any more.
