My name is John Right. I enlisted in the army because I wanted my country to remain free. Not a country controlled by the British.
They were lad by Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane. There was a violent battle going on at Lake Borge. About 53 rowboats with British soldiers attacked five American dinges protecting the waters near New Orleans. After a couple of days, an Army of British soldiers lead by Major General Sir Edward Michael Pakenham landed near the Mississippi River. Major Pakenham and his army, made thier way to Chalmette, Louisiana. I was lead by Major General Andrew Jackson. He was very good at artillery. We heard from our scout that the British had set up camp for the night. General Jackson decided to attack the camp that night. With the americans artillery and his, troops we attacked the camp (after stealing some supplies) and we retreated to New Orleans. We lost 24 men and 115 were wounded. As soon as we got to new Orleans the residents helped the wounded. I saved three men and I was shot in the arm.
I was awarded the Purple Heart. But I would give it back if I couldfinish this war and go home. Once we made it to New Orleans our men were treated for their injures and ready to fight. This battle at the Mississippi helped stall the British from attacking New Orleans. Since the British were regrouping, we put out our heavy artillery so that the British couldn’t get to New Orleans. On Christmas day, General Pakenham arrived at the battlefield to take over command. After three days of fighting he had to retreat because of casualties. Once General Pakenham retreated, we repaired are guns and put defenses around them. We can’t take that kind of damage again.
I will send a map to tell my commander where we are. And where we need reinforcements.
There was an immediate need for my commend at the battle of New Orleans. The commander made me a field lenient. It was up to me to stop General Pakenham and make him retreat to his boats once and for all and sail back to Great Britain. In the early morning of January 8th, 1815 Pakenham called his army to do a two pronged assault on our position. Half of Pakenham attacked west of are position and one right in front of us. In New Orleans.
They were covered by a heavy fog, but as they got closer to the canal, the fog raised and I called for Artillery. The British had only muskets and forgot to bring the ladder so they couldn’t cross the canal. The British were trapped. They had no defense. Many British officers died because of their careless mistake. Pakenham was killed, and the British retreated. On February 17, 1815 – the treaty of Ghent was ratified. I am now a General of the United States Army. The day that we signed that Treaty was a wonderful day for the United States. I am still needed here thereafter the in meetings and negotiations. I hope to return home to my family very soon. The day I have been waiting for is finally here. I’m going home. dinner. We had a great time then one of my friends gave me this drawing of the British retreating will alwaystreasure this picture.
The war is over. I am blessed to have a loving family and a good living. When my children are ready, I will tell them about the war, why I chose to fight, and how blessed we are to be free in the United States of America.
