Ramayya went to Birbal, the wise, for a judgment.
Next day both Ramayya Venkayya were presented before Birbal.
Ramayya was the first to say “ sir, when I was about to go to the pilgrimage, I gave all my savings putting them in a bag to Venkayya as he is my friend. He tells me that I did not give him any bag’’.
Venkayya says, “sir. Yes, I agree I am a friend of his but I don’t know that he has gone for pilgrimage. Not this, I have gone a month back on a business trip and had come a weak back. Sir, tell me, how will he give me?’`
Ramayya says, “ sir, I have given him my bag under the mango tree. Now he is lying’’.
Birbal heard the two. He called Ramayya and asked him to go to the mango tree and get it as the witness. Ramayya tried to ask how it was possible, but he obeyed his orders and went to the mango tree.
An hour passed, all were eagerly waiting for Ramayya. “ Why did this Ramayya not yet come?’’ they thought.
In the mean while, Ramayya went to the mango tree and asked, “ please come and give the witness as Birbal wants your witness’’. Saying so thrice started to his return journey to the court.
Birbal said, “ Ramayya has not yet come, shall I give out the judgment?’’. Venkayya interferes and says it takes more than half an hour to return. Birbal asks him whether it is far. Venkayya answers that it is around fifteen miles from the court.
Finally, Ramayya comes back and tells Birbal, “ sir, I begged the tree to come for witness thrice, but it did not obey your order’’. Birbal said, “ the tree has come to given its witness. Venkayya give the money the bag back, otherwise, you would get fifty lashes from the whip’’.
Venkayya returns the money to Ramayya and asks him pardon.
