A myth on how the rainbow was formed and how rain got its name.
Long, long ago the goddess Hera had a mortal son named Jason, but there was a sickness going around and it was very deadly. Hera feared for her son’s life. She told him to find a traveler and to leave the town. He could only find one person who would lead him out of the town, but what Jason didn’t know was that the traveler had the sickness too. Jason got the sickness anyway and died. Hera could not stop crying, no matter how hard Zeus tried to cheer her up.
10 years had past and Hera was still crying. The people of the little town could not take it. All of the crops had drowned, all the trees withered, even some of the people drowned. The goddess Hera called it “rain” from her eye. One man was about to get married but the “rain” ruined the plans.
A few days later the people (or at least what remained of them) decided to have a contest to see who could cheer up Hera. There were people dancing, singing, putting on plays and lots more. Then a stranger came to town. He heard of the contest, and entered it. He started to walk on a tight rope, doing lots of tricks. He was declared the winner.
The next day the city tried to find out how to get this stranger to Hera, who was still crying. Then Zeus heard that the mortal humans were trying to cheer up Hera. Zeus had tried everything to cheer her up; he had no choice but to see if this mere mortal could do it. He zapped the stranger to Mt. Olympus. Then he started to tightrope walk, but then something unexpected happened. He started to juggle. He was almost to the other side, and Hera was cheering up. He was juggling priceless vases. But then he accidently tossed one of the four vases too far to the left, when he leaned to get it he lost his balance and fell to his death. Hera started to cry again and even harder because she thought it was her fault the man fell. Then Zeus got an idea…
Zeus would use his fool to cheer her up. The fool tried dancing in a funny way. That didn’t work. He tried singing weirdly. Nothing. He even tried tumbling. Still nothing. He tried everything else but nothing worked. The fool just frowned, suddenly Hera started laughing.
“What’s so funny?” the fool asked.
“Your frown is so colorful,” she said.
“It is?” he asked.
“Yes, it is” Hera said. So then the fool frowned some more. The town called it a “rainbow” it came after “rain” and it looked like a hunters bow. Remember that man who was going to get married, well it just so happened that the marriage date was on the day of the “rainbow” and that was the marriage present he gave to his wife. Every time it “rains” that’s Hera thinking of Jason and every time you see a “rainbow” that’s the fool frowning to make Hera happy. That’s why we have “rainbows” and “rain” to this very day.
