A detailed and interesting, yet simple short story of Halloween night and a haunted pumpkin…
It was cool, breezy night so far and a long draft of wind had just swept through the sky. It seemed as if maybe there was a storm coming. If you listened closely, even from a distance, you could hear the dark sky rumbling. There were eerie noises coming from left and right. Everyone was afraid. No one even wanted to look outside; for fear that this just might be the worst storm yet; possibly even the storm to end all others. Of course, Satuya, Washington was known for its storms, but you never know. The people in this town were paranoid. And all the signs of a typical storm were there…it had been raining for days; there are sounds of rumbling thunder becoming closer and closer…
All the children were anxious to get outside. After all, it was Halloween… They would be able to go out eventually, but not just yet.
The storm began!
Tree branches swayed. They thumped loudly against windows everywhere. Hail fell hard and fast from the night sky. Lightning struck the otherwise peaceful sky several times…It was 7:00 before it finally began to calm. Thankfully the storm had only last a couple of hours. The people waited, just in case Mother Nature was trying to play a little trick on them.
Finally!! The children were allowed onto the streets. They rushed outside, eager to start on their night’s mission: the hunt for candy.
Upon a white fence, three small black figures stood tall, their twitching tails high in the air, backs arched. The glistening stars shone bright and high above in the twilight zone.
Inside the homes now, faucets were going drip drop drip drop. The wind was now a gentle breeze. For a moment there was total silence. So silent you could here the footsteps of trick-or-treaters walking along the cold, hard cement. It was still a little wet, not that they minded.
There were many sounds, still. The sound of crackling candy wrappers filled in air. The crunching and munching of sweet, sugary treats filed high into the thermosphere.
Doors all through the neighborhood creaked as their owners stepped onto the hard ground. Owners everywhere stood outdoors in the dark, starry night with cauldrons full of candy.
