Long before the first white man Arrived to settle our homeland The great Bald Eagle flew over all of the United States. At this time the Indians believed animals were help mates. Wild creatures were often called spiritual guides or Alo. The Indians called the eagle Wamblesska and Paco.
Our story is about a Bald Eagle named Sahale.
Sahale was a very grand Bald Eagle.
He was beautiful with his dark brown body and snowy white head.
“Not a more beautiful bird every flew the skies,” many people said.
The colonists admired Sahale’s grace as he flew high in the sky.
They would look up when they heard his friendly cry.
And Sahale had watched and seen the colonist.
He saw that a horrible war had left the colonist free to exist.
Sahale thought, these people love freedom as much as me.
They are willing to fight for many years to be free.
Sahale began to like these people who were so brave.
Some of them even seemed friendly as they looked up to wave.
But in this new land of freedom and opportunity
The colonist wanted something to signify their liberty.
They called this sign they were looking for an emblem.
They wanted something to show to everyone their freedom.
They thought about trees, the stars, moon and sun.
For many weeks they talked, but their job was still not done.
They could not find the one thing that seemed right.
The looked, and thought, and talked into the night.
A group of men were now in charge. They were called officials.
The officials had a long list of ideas including many animals.
Sahale sat high above the men in an old pine tree.
He said, “these men are bothered and it worries me.
I wish I could help them. I would if I could.
Oh well,” he said to himself, “sitting here is doing no good.”
Sahale spread his beautiful large wings in flight.
“The eagle!” shouted one of the men, “is our emblem, all right!”
“Yes!” smiled the others watching Shale circle and soar.
“He‘ll be our emblem of freedom for now and ever more!”
