This is a short story written in similar style to "The Canterbury Tales", describing five space travelers on their way to Mars.
Blasting through the Milky Way at nearly 20 times the speed of sound, five brave souls sit restlessly aboard the Voyager, a space shuttle bound for Mars. They are all strapped into seats along the sides of the shuttle. In the shuttle there are various compartments containing medical supplies, food, entertainment, and exercise equipment. The quarters are cramped and privacy is nonexistent except for the small bathroom located in the rear of the shuttle. These five pioneers have been Mars bound for nearly 6 months now. They are due to arrive at the space station on Mars in under a week.
These five space pilgrims are on a mission to bring supplies and more human life to the red planet. This mission is the third of its kind with many more planned in the future. The ultimate goal of these missions is to colonize Mars and form a refuge for the overcrowded inhabitants of Earth. Each of the passengers aboard the Voyager have a special skill or talent that guaranteed them a seat aboard the shuttle over anyone else on Earth.
The first pilgrim I will identify is Gregory Kasinzki. He is 43 years old, has dark brown hair, brown eyes, a thick beard, and an athletic build. On Earth he was a well respected Geneticist He worked with both human genes and plant genes. His work involved “juicing up” the human genenome, specifically to adapt to adverse conditions on Mars. Some of his other work included mutating plants to produce more oxygen and survive off less water and sunlight. Because of the controversy surrounding his profession, he has very low ethical and moral standards. He is essentially playing God by altering the genes and structures of different organisms. He does not care what cost in terms of human life it takes to perfect his gene mutations.
The next pilgrim I will identify is Debra Whitmore. She is 23 years old, has long flowing blond hair, an angelic face, and a slim, athletic body. Her eyes are baby blue and she exudes an aura of beauty. Her profession is best stated as baby maker. Her purpose once she reaches Mars is to get pregnant and have as many children as humanly possible. Doctors have given her the latest fertility drugs that will allow her to have as many as seven children at once. Although she is essentially using her body as a scientific baby making machine, she has a Christian religious background, and has a good set of morals and values.
