Here’s the scene: you’re frantic, desperate. You really wish you had thought to put [insert item here] in your bag- it would really help right now. Here are a few things to keep handy in order to avoid these situations.

  1. Band-Aids. If you get a small scratch and suddenly start bleeding, it is great to have a bandage for your wound.
  2. Tissues. If your allergies spontaneously attack, or you break down at an emotional movie, or if you just spill coffee on yourself, it is pretty helpful to have something to clean up with.
  3. Hand sanitizer. Germs coat every surface- door handles, stair railings, people’s hands- anywhere you look. Carrying around a small bottle of hand sanitizer can help you avoid illness.
  4. Cell phone. Never leave home without it- you never know when your phone will come in handy.
  5. Flashlight or mini-flashlight. Whether you’re searching for something small on the ground or in your car, or just need to see better in dim lighting, a flashlight is always useful.
  6. Sunscreen. At least, if you live in a sunny area or during the summer. If you find that you will have prolonged exposure to the sun, then it could save you from some painful burns.
  7. Food. Small snack packs can save you from stomach-gnawing hunger. Let’s say you skip breakfast and have to work through lunch, so on the drive home, you’re not too happy to get stuck in traffic. That pack of crackers in your bag will save you.
  8. Bottled water. Especially during the summer, freezing a water bottle will be great. Nothing feels better than cool water on a hot day.
  9. Spare headphones for your MP3 player. If your headphones break or are damaged, or you need to lend someone a pair, having spares is always useful.
  10. Pens and pencils. You really need to write something down, and you can never find something to write with. Problem solved.
  11. Notepad. See above.
  12. List of contacts for an emergency. Your cell phone dies, and you need to call mom/dad/significant other/friend/boss. Keep a contact list for important people somewhere, so that if you need to call them and don’t have your phone’s address book, you can.
  13. Book or magazine. You never know when you’ll get stuck somewhere, bored out of your mind. Having a book or magazine that you actually enjoy can relieve that boredom.
  14. Ear plugs. If you have to deal with loud noise, these will save your hearing.
  15. Spare change. For vending machines, payphones, and more.
