What is and is not really behind the mythology of so called sound advice.

You know what the media and medics keep saying about things you should or shouldn’t do, because they are ‘bad’ for you, but not much gets side about the flip side of the coin.  As it turns out, if you do your homework, there are lots of reasons why you should ignore so-called expert advice and enjoy a little of what you fancy.

Take unprotected sex, for example.  HIV and AIDS are just the worst case scenarios for what could happen if you do this, but research is proving that the main body of opinion could be wrong. Gordon Gallup, of the State University of New York, asked nearly 1,000 women about their sex lives, as part of his research.  The results are surprising.

He found that women whose partners didn’t use contraception came out consistently happier than the others. It seems there is something in the semen that appears to counter depression in females, though the ‘bareback’ women are more gutted when a relationship ends, as if the semen were addictive, in some way.

Scientists at the University of Adelaide found that semen exposure leads to more healthy pregnancies, as though the semen is conditioning the female immune system to be more protective of the growing child.  As an added bonus for the guys, it seems that the semen is a lot more effective when the lady swallows it.

Does using mobile phones fry your brain?  Not according to Alan Preece, of the British Oncology Centre.

His study of mobile phone radiation showed that regular users were 4% quicker at certain mental tasks than others, because the radiation increases blood flow to some parts of the brain, and has the added effect of making the user actually feel younger.

Constant listening to loud, repetitive music is definitely going to affect your hearing, but the desire to do it goes back to primal times.  Our primitive ancestors had mating rituals that involved a lot of noise, and the loud bass stimulates those primitive areas of the brain that tell us we are about to get laid.  So loud music makes you feel good because it gets you horny.

Smoking is a bad habit, as all the evidence seems to scream out, but Jodi Flaws of the University of Maryland says that there is hard evidence of smokers being generally slimmer than non-smokers.  This could be down to nicotine being an appetite suppressant or a catalyst for burning calories quicker, but the facts are there for all to see.

I guess there is never one side to a story… but it is generally only one side which is promoted by the media. Thanks for sharing the other side.
