At the ends of the 18 Th century in Dominican Republic appeared a rare murderer, whose crimes were so blood thirsty that he was named the people eater. He was said to have the features of an Indian with long black hair and his features well proportioned to his size except for his feet that were very small for his size.

         It is commonly known that he went to Haiti to learn the ways of witchcraft. He supposedly was able to be in more that one place at a time and was able to cross the whole country in one night using supernatural means. For many years people were terrified of the “people eater (comegente)”.

         No one was able to catch him because once his feet touched water he would disappear leaving a putrid and nauseating scent in his wake. He killed his victims using some sort of club.

         After many years of terrifying the whole country he was finally caught by a farmer who lived in the country, using a rattan witch basket* (bejuco de brujas). The farmer tied him up and took him to the capital. The people eater was hanged without filing a case nor being presented at a court.

         Even today people say that he roams the country at night. Killing people and disappearing when his feet touch water.

*A rattan witch basket is an artifact used to make witches fall from the sky.
