My husband has a rather idiosyncratic style, he likes big patterns and bright colours, and you should see the shorts that he wears on the beach, they are very loud – just like him! He has a passion for footwear especially for Dr Marten boots.

My husbandng got new shoes the other day, they were boots to be exact, he walks much better in boots. They were Dr Martens as usual, but more beautiful than the usual clumpy old things that he wears. When he got home from work he couldn’t stop talking about the new boots and he kept taking them out of the box to show me how nice they were, they were nice but I can’t manage too much excitement about a pair of shoes. Having not got the desired response he tucked the box containing the new boots under his arm and left the room. He appeared again a few minutes later wearing the the new boots, he did a few laps around the lounge, stopped, did a twirl, then changed direction and continued to walk around the lounge. It was a bit like horseless dressage! He wanted me to admire the boots and I did my very best to keep a straight face as I complemented his footwear, but he had changed out of his work suit and the sight of him cavorting around the lounge in smart new boots and PJ’s proved too much for me. It had a certain comedy value, but he was most indignant when he saw me laughing!

Sometimes it feels as if we have been together forever because despite his eccentricities we get on incredibly well, but we have only been married for just over three years. There were lots of reasons why we didn’t rush into getting married, but there was one major obstacle for him – I wanted him to wear shoes! He always wears Dr Martens because he is the proud owner of odd feet, no I am not being unkind, they are odd. One foot is 4 sizes bigger than the other so it does limit his choice of footwear, but I’m sure he would still be obsessed with Dr Martens even if he possessed perfectly matched trotters. Eventually he negotiated a deal concerning the shoes for the wedding. He would wear Dr Marten Oxford shoes for the big day and I would make no objection to him buying a new pair of purple Dr Marten boots. I wouldn’t have minded him buying the boots anyway, but I let him think he had struck a tough bargain. He was even brave enough to suggest that I should also wear Dr Martens. They make Dr Martens for women, but there is no way on earth that I was going to wear them for my wedding – or any other occasion. My husband’s boots are incredibly heavy, it would have been like getting married in diving boots, I wouldn’t have been able to lift my feet up! My friend got married wearing an Arsenal football top, I was tempted by that idea, but I don’t think I was designed for sports wear so I stuck to something a little more conventional.
