My husband has a rather idiosyncratic style, he likes big patterns and bright colours, and you should see the shorts that he wears on the beach, they are very loud – just like him! He has a passion for footwear especially for Dr Marten boots.

My husband Dr Marten’s often get him into trouble. When I got up one Saturday morning he was long gone – to a railway open day. Out of sight did not mean out of mind, I encountered the first reminder of him in the hall. I bent down to pick up a piece of litter that had been dropped, it was the discarded wrapper from some Dr Marten boot laces. After muttering darkly about having better things to do than pick up his rubbish, I continued into the lounge. A pair Dr Marten boots were parked in the middle of the floor, they are a sort of dark red colour, I think he calls it cherry red. It wasn’t the colour of the boots that bothered me, it was the colour of the laces, they were bright red with a yellow pattern and they looked absolutely disgusting. Maybe my husband was anticipating a Bay City Rollers revival, but I was fairly sure that the new look would not catch on. Everyone has their limits, even me, and if he thought he was setting foot outside wearing those laces he is sadly mistaken! Thankfully the laces disappeared after a few weeks, I think he finally got the message.

Lol. Very cute story. I really enjoy reading your articles especially the one at the toystore. I never knew one foot could be bigger than the other. cool shoes, especially when they are new they smell so good right out of the box.

I loved this. It took me back to sixteen years ago when my son went out to buy his first pair of shoes on his own. He came back with a huge pair of Doc Martens which he paid £80 for. He hardly ever wore them because they rubbed. I think he learnt his lesson that day and paid far less for further shoes. A great piece.

Frances, I love your story. Men do get set their foot wear. Sounds like it could have been my better half. Gotta keep an eye on these men.
