The following sample of an excerpt of the first chapter of ALL ABOUT BRIAN,” incorporates factual episodes of a schizophrenic who constantly hears hostile voices, threatening to harm him, causing him to run away from home, in order to escape from the threat that was plaguing his life and those of other members of his family:

In the meantime, Brian was taking his medication regularly. It helped calm him down to some extent, though he would remain withdrawn and would continue to grasp his forehead, from time to time. His teachers would notice some kind of digression from his studies, as far as his concentration was concerned. It was apparent that his medication had not effectively turned him around at this time, unlike previously, when he was younger.
George and Jerry kept working long hours at the store and would sometimes come home late in the evening after dining outside in a restaurant. After watching the late news, together with Marion and Brian, they would go to bed, though Marion would be wide awake until after Brian would be administered his medication. It was a routine that she would follow night after night. The emotional and physical pressures of the day appeared to be already taking their toll on her. She would sometimes go to bed with a dizzying headache and aching joints before taking a couple of pain tablets prior to falling asleep.
Brian would wake up in the morning after a good night’s sleep, mumbling to himself, soon after the salutary effect of his medication would wear off. It was a bizarre sight for the family around the breakfast table. While his father would unwittingly call the episode to his attention, his mother would invariably ask him if he needed anything. Brian would either not answer, or react nervously. She would usually deal with his problem psychologically, knowing that it was beyond his control to help himself.
By now, Brian’s classmates appeared to be getting accustomed to his harmless peculiarities. Many of his peers would consider him to be a type of individual whose behavior might be attributed to his unique intelligence and quick comprehension in his class. Even when he began to slacken in his studies to some extent, his peers would continue to regard his capabilities in a similar light. His teachers regarded him as an outstanding student. They considered his demeanor to be nothing but harmless quirks of adolescent characteristics, unrelated to some of his episodes at home.
