The interior of the star described in this article has crystallized into diamond.
Have you ever dreamed of an diamond bigger than Earth? Or a diamond floating in the sky? Or better yet, a diamond bigger than Earth floating in the sky? Well the star I’m going to tell you about makes those dreams come true!
BPM 37093, better known as Lucy is a white dwarf star, but not an ordinary white dwarf. It is the largest known diamond! Like most other white dwarves its interior is made of pure carbon, but the pressure in this specific star has made the carbon diamond.
Being in the constellation Centaurus, this star of approximately 4000 km diameter stands at about 50 light years away from Earth. That makes it far out of the reach of space probes, but rather close to Earth compared to many other known celestial objects and bodies. The star weighs approximately 10 BILLION TRILLION TRILLION carats. BPM 37093 has been nicknamed Lucy by some scientists in reference to The Beatles’ song ” Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds”
