French phrases make English harder.

Déjà vu—Jamais vu—Presque vu

by LewSethics

Everyone, and when I say that I include you, has experienced the “Vu” phenomenon at one time or other, the “Vu” being a mental experience that can only be described as “somewhere between Cleveland and Dtroit.”

—–0—–

Déjà vu) is the most familiar.   Déjà vu is the feeling that one has already experienced something that one is actually encountering for the first time.

Déjà vu is the feeling that one has already experienced something that one is actually encountering for the first time.

Something like that.

Déjà vu also means “disagreeable familiarity or sameness”, as when one crappy TV show reminds us of another crappy TV show.

Déjà entendu (already heard) and déjà lu (already seen) are déjà vu’s little brothers.

Déjà vu is also known as “promnesia”, which doesn’t sound quite as cool as déjà vu:  “Wow man, I just got this weird feeling of promnesia”, see?

Déjà vecu refers to an experience that involves more than just the sense of sight, and is commonly confused with déjà vu.  Déjà vecu involves a great amount of detail, involving all the senses, with a mysterious foreknowledge of what will happen next.  Spooky.

Jamais vu is the feeling that something familiar is being experienced for the first time, or when something familiar seems strange.  This can be observed when one repeats the same word over and over until the word seems to lose meaning, and becomes just a sound.  Try it, it is pretty weird.

Jamais vu is also known as paramnesia, which somehow sounds clinically fake, like an excuse Johnny made for being late or something.

And last but not least we have, um, I know the word, it has “vu” in it.  What is that word?  It’s right on the tip of my tongue.  Oh, I know!

Presque vu  the feeling that “it is on the tip of my tongue”, has been described as mild torment, something akin to being on the brink of a sneeze.  Then if one finds the word there is considerable relief.

One is sure there are more vu’s out there somewhere, so one will keep looking.

Promnesia sounds like amnesia that causes you to forget your curfew on prom night.
