What drinking Gatorade means to you after you pass 30.

As a kid, playing sports in school, I drank Gatorade because it tasted so much better than water. Oh yeah, commercials say it rehydrates you and replaces nutrients lost in sweat. Which is totally true. But at that age it was just a selling point to my mom who kept telling me to drink water instead because it didn’t cost anything. I never knew that as my body started to age, I would develop a new found glory for GATORADE.

We don’t always drink as much water as we should. And, while younger, it never seemed as important. Then you inch your way towards turning 30 years old. Things start to change just a little bit. You notice that if you don’t drink enough water your skin is very dry, you develop headaches, and your lips chap easier. You try to ignore it because, really, who has time to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Finally, you have reached the point of no return. You drastically try to ingest as much water as your stomach will allow, but you still don’t quench that aching thirst you feel in your feet. And it happens…you had dehydrated yourself so much that you lost vital nutrients called electrolytes. You start to get small muscle cramps throughout your body, one after another. Until it hits you! Gatorade!

See what you never really cared to learn about as a kid, was that the “better tasting than water” liquid you were drinking was created for a reason. It was created for hardworking athletes, who loose tremendous amounts of hydration. The result of this is severe cramping and headaches. So as a 30 year old, when I get crampy in my legs, and I know I have not drank enough water, I twist open a Gatorade. I can feel it’s “electrolyte goodness” run through my viens.
