When mentioning the words aviation security, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the rigorous procedure of going through passenger airport security checks.

Of course this practice is extremely important for the safety of crew members and passengers. The threat of terrorism has never been more prevalent and the technology used to cause disturbance and harm to others in the air is pushing airport responses to terrorism to the limits.

Thankfully, many of these security practices are well-known and extremely effective. Detectors for drugs and metals clamp down on the potential for drug traffickers and violent weapons carriers. X-rays can scan through luggage to find similar materials or other banned or dangerous items. Whilst security officers, CCTV and security doors prevent accessing highly restricted areas within the airport.

The question is, what is worth protecting in an airport aside the safety of crew and passengers who are actually flying?

Cargo

Millions of packages are flown around the globe everyday in international freight operations. There is absolutely no limit as to what could be sent to anywhere in the world; whether it be a householders antique furniture, car or their pet; right the way up to international aid or medical research equipment.

This cargo has a value that is immeasurable unto its owner. They chose to fly it for a reason; it is likely to be one-of-a-kind which places and enormous pressure on airport security to handle it responsibly. The same goes for passenger luggage. The areas where this cargo is kept should be monitored by CCTV around the clock.

People

There is also the protection of people to consider whilst travelling through or waiting inside an airport. Certain individuals will carry needs or protection that is greater of that than an ordinary passenger.

Frequently politicians, foreign dignitaries, royalty, celebrities and sports persons fly from airports where they could come into contact with threats from the public, or just general uncomfortableness from overcrowding. Personal bodyguards can act as a professional liaison to make their journey through the airport as comfortable as possible.

Fully-trained security guards will also be required to look after high-risk passengers such as criminals and illegal immigrants.

Operational equipment

Aviation security is also needed to protect the financial and operational assets of the airport. Planes need to make sure that only qualified airmen have access to them for maintenance, and that other restricted areas are accessed only be designated crew.

Sensitive areas like control towers, server rooms and lock-ups should be protected with passwords or keyed doors for example.

Essentially, a combination of all the security above measures mentioned above is a good start to protecting your airport assets – as well as your passengers.
