Some families are in the news oftener than other. Such is the favor of our live & up-to-the-minute news media and that includes you too, United States. You’ve got your CNN and you’re down with it too.

Here in Toronto, Canada, the family Makhniashvili is once again in the news.

Back on August of 2009, the young teenage female Mariam Makhniashvili turned up missing. Her last known whereabouts was
walking to school. And after that, -she was gone without a trace. Everyone was shocked and searches spent many days and weeks searching for her wherabouts.

The trail has gone cold. Above average in attractiveness, Mariam is from a middle-to-upper middle class family and from first appearances, most definitely Caucasian. A white woman. From a good family. -This makes for great media.

Who Let the Dogs Out!

The media blithely and wholeheartedly bestowed missing teen Mariam Makhniashvili the full ‘Missing White Woman Syndrome‘ due her. Her face is seen everywhere. Her circumstances are well known. On television, on posters, handbills, in the newsprint. I mean hell folks, -I can spell her last name just from memory!

The media loves her case because it adores her face.  Sad and terrifying though her disappearrance factually is. She may have come to misfortune and we get that. A teenage girl last seen walking to school disappears without a trace. Some days later, her backpack is found a few blocks away, -but no sign of Mariam. No note pinned to her belongs. No clandestine rendevous e-mails found in any of her electronic devices. No sign of blood or any evidence that she struggled or resisted an attack or abduction. Sshe is just simply ‘gone.’

Candlelight vigils ensue. Teary-eyed pleas from family members for Mariam to call home if she can. Search parties set out in search for her body or articles of clothing that she may have been wearing at the time of her disappearance. Any evidence that may lead to discovering her fate. Not to split hairs here, but had her skin color been a shade or two closer to the color of my boot leather, the fifth estate at large would have long since forgotten about her and moved on.

Reported sightings of the missing Mariam turn up from all across Canada coast to coast, almost rivalling sightings of Elvis Presley south of the border. But the sad truth is this: the prognosis for finding Mariam Makhniashvili alive is really unlikely. She may have run away from home for whatever reasons but her complete disappearance without a trace is unlikely if she were still alive and merely hiding just about anywhere.

Well I think it is great news that you don’t get into the papers, if it takes your kids going missing or stabbings!
