Almost Lovers

You smiled as you came down the stairs letting your hand glide softly along the banister. Cameras followed your every move, journalist scrambled for quick interviews and guests eyed you with admiration and envy. From the way you gracefully held your head high, to the way you seemed to dance across the room and to the way you gained everyone attention, it was easy to believe that you, Sandara Park is indeed the Queen of Korean Music and Movies.

You entertained the media with you bright smiles and witty answers but your eyes continued to roam around the room. It was already past 10 and yet the person who should be beside you, sharing the limelight with you, answering questions regarding the success of your recent movie wasn’t around. You continued to smile, using your excellent acting skills to make everybody believe that nothing is wrong. That the missing leading man is just caught up in the made up traffic jam.

And then without warning he appeared looking perfect, as always. You watched as he made his way towards you wearing that apologetic smile that vanished your growing irritation within seconds as if they were made of useless dust. Your lips curved into a smile as you gestured for him to take the empty seat beside you.

He was so near. So near that you can smell the faint scent of perfume that was made just for him. So near that it was easy for you to observe his features. So near that you can closely watch his every expression. You witnessed how his lips curved into a bright smile as he thanked everyone who watched and supported your film. Your heart thumped loudly inside your chest then stilled as you watched how his nose twitched when one reporter asked about your on screen kiss.

You flushed and tore your gaze away from him but you weren’t fast enough. He turned, held your gaze and felt yourself once again drown into the depths of his orbs.

“It was, pleasant.” He said with a smile.

The sweetest sadness in your eyes.

Your smile froze, you looked away and muttered something that made them laugh and giggle in delight.

For in his eyes, you saw the girl he loves.

In his eyes, your hopes and dreams started to crumble.

Inside his eyes, you saw her.

Later that evening you danced at the center of the ballroom, with a smile on you face. You gently circled your hands around his neck. “Please, just for a moment.” You whispered, ignoring the painful throb inside your chest, when you felt him stiffen with your touch. Being the gentleman that he was, he granted your wish. Your eyes closed, you moved closer to his warmth. Wishing, foolishly hoping that the song won’t end.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered and placed a distance between your bodies as soon as the song ended.

You just nodded without saying anything, afraid that your voice would break. And worse that you would once again ask him to love you and he would once again, refuse.

You watched with a smile as he started walking out the door closely followed by a lady known as his best friend.

But you knew better.

You continued to smile, perfectly masking your pain and succeeded when everyone remained oblivious to the fact that your heart was silently breaking.

You watched with sadness reflected in your eyes as he turned to wave goodbye.

His eyes twinkling with happiness

His smile captivating

His heart

…never yours.

Should have known you’d bring me heartache.
Almost lovers always do.
