Are we independent?
As a child enters from tender age into adolescent years, he often asks himself, “am I independent?” The answer to this simple question of every teenager can be viewed in two lights depending on what independence means.
Independence means freedom or liberation. In some ways the teens of present world are perhaps the most independent. But this is, in reality the need of the hour. Today’s world is globalized and evolved to such a great extent that one cannot exist confined to the old traits and traditions, every individual has to revolutionize himself to cope with the requisites of todays modernized world. Parents have indeed accepted this fact and are becoming rational towards giving more freedom to their kids.
But some parents are still confronting the freedom of speech and thought of their children and by confining the mind of their kid in a shell, they think they are protecting it, but actually they are hampering it and making their kids an easier prey to the scandalous behavior of our society that parents fear. Enclosing the minds of young ones do not shelter them; rather it obstructs them from understanding the world outside.
Real protection is not in fortification, it is not by bounding up the young thoughts but it lies in creating awareness in young minds, giving them the power of self awareness, self control, self expression and giving them such decisive, influential and modeled foundations that they themselves can distinguish the wrong from the right and above all by letting the young mind to decide own path under participative supervision.
Parents must balance the level of independence to get fruitful benefits, while giving enough liberty parents should keep hold of the reins too so that the teens might not gallop off like stray horses which will lead them to arrogance.
Today our parents have realized the strength of giving freedom with participation, thus, we are independent in todays globalized world.
