Many people in the World dress up as heros from movies and books, this is a disturbing and growing obsession which can lead down a dark path!

Are you suffering from an identity crisis?

Last night my partner and me settled in front of the TV, as per usual there was nothing of interest on.  We decided to watch a DVD, we found a box set of  “The Lord of the Rings” we brought this set some three years previously but had never watched it.  We must be the only couple on the planet who hasn’t seen the box office busting fantasy movies.

We watched the movies back to back and I must admit although this type of movie isn’t my normal choice I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.  I recalled the hype a few years ago when the new films were released.  I watched the news footage of the third film’s premier in London.  I was amazed at the time to see ordinary folk dressed up as Hobbits and Elves and Dwarfs! There was even a wizard with a long white beard!

For the readers who have missed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, these Hobbits and Elves etc are all integral characters in the movie.  I found this behaviour amusing I believed it was just people getting into the spirit of having fun with the film.  Then I did some research on other block-busting money spinning movies such as “Star Wars”.

I looked through back footage of premiers of Star Wars films in London and America.  I was surprised to see many fans queuing to see the movie dressed as Imperial storm Troopers or dressed in black as Darth Vader!  There was even a Hans Solo and a Wookie. Once again is this a piece of good humoured fun?

Recently Britain had a general election, of an exit pole of voters 250,000 people said they believed in the power of the force from Star Wars more than any politician!  This of course is in good humour or is it?  The deeper my research went the more disturbing the results were.

Excellent article as always LB. My take on this is that many people, apart from being avid fans, use such TV series or movie icons to form a part of escapism from the real world.
If you ever travel to LA and visit Hollywood, by the Chinese Theatre where the Avenue of the Stars is situated, you will find many people in “fancy dress”, such as Storm Troopers, Superman and other cult movie characters. Great advertising no doubt for the visitors. So whether identity crisis or not, it adds a different dimension from the everyday world out there.
    Keep up the great work.

I think the fantasy adds some spice to the lives of these people. I could never afford to go this far. For me, blogging adds the the spice to my life.

I loved the hook you used to bring people in to read this article. We all need our fun and you know I love ballroom dancing but it’s not all over my house and I don’t do shows every weekend off. I can’t understanding learning a make believe language the real ones are hard enough to learn. I speak a little and I mean a little German and some Spanish. These are hard for me to remember as I have to think in English first then remember the other word. Anyway I am getting off subject. Good enjoyable article.

As a fan of the Lord of the Rings and most types of Science fiction, I can understand the interest in these characters and the worlds they inhabit. Yes it is fantasy/ escapism , and I cant say that I would dress up in costumes and live the roles , however if the participants choose this life style (and can still function in the mundane) good luck to them. You might argue that it preferable to alcohol or drug addiction and not harmful . Good read Mr banks!!

Interesting stuff. It’s fun to be like someone else at times.

Great read. Of course, coming from New Zealand I have to be a Lord of the Rings fan – but my attraction is the films locations.
