Greedy or not? Asking for gifts or just accepting what you can get??

Christmas comes the same time every year. Some look forward to the occasion, some dread its arrival. I tend to do both. This year seems different to me though. I wonder how this holiday will turn out. First, I obviously cannot afford to buy gifts for everyone. That, too seems to be a question I have? Are we suppose to buy gifts for ALL our nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles? Is it polite or just routine? The people in my family have chosen to only buy for the children this holiday season. That alone is very costly, being there are more children now than adults. Am I obligated to buy for ALL the children? If I choose to buy for just my own, does that make me a scrooge? I feel terrible that we don’t have a lot of money. We struggle just to pay our bills, let alone purchase gifts for children who deserve coal instead. My reason for posting this thread, is more to get an opinion on the subject. Making money on this site seems nice, but I do not expect to make very much. I tend to use this site to vent more than to earn a quick buck or two. With that being said, what is your opinion on gift buying this holiday season? How does your family prepare for such an expensive event?

This is going to be a difficult Christmas for many people. The recession has hit lots of families. You are not a Scrooge if you simply cannot afford to buy what a child wants. I think the best way is to look after your own family first and if you have young kids try talk them into something you can afford. If the kids are older, then tell them the truth that times are harder than before. As far as the relations are concerned buy small presents in bargain stores if you have to. Books make great presents and can be cheap to buy.
