An encounter with a challenger becomes a great friendship and a scholarship.

Big John

So I’m in college and enjoying my new found freedom, which is actually not that different to that which I had at home except for the fact that finally I could allow my hair to grow as long as I wanted it to without a concern or judgment being placed o me because of my seemingly rebellious actions.

College is indeed awesome and on stepping into my Chemistry 101 class, I meet Kelly, a gorgeous yet slightly rough girl with whom I shared a few nervous words.

Right next to her is this guy who seems a little athletic but by our standards of athletes, he was a little too heavy set to be all that he was boastfully bragging of being, and of course I was totally judging him by then. In my judgmental response I implied that I could throw the shot farther than he could and he then laid down the challenge, that I should come to his practice on the following morning and show him what Iwas made of.

He did not know that I had accepted his challenge, but the next morning, before the sun had even risen, there I was in the gymnasium, ready for the showdown. This was the introduction to my soon to be coach, Marcus Syen, who also soon be the funniest person with the weirdest luck I had ever witnessed.

With a quick intro, a smile and a nod, it was on, John a.k.a. Big John, got into his throwers stance and in a blast of all the power that he could muster, he threw the shot pretty far. To me this was a feat that I had regularly seen since I had been the Shot Putt Champion of my country in the men’s division at the age of 18. Of course this was not a part of my conversation with “Big John”, or Marcus Syen. He felt very comfortable with his outcome and since I was a slightly smaller man in stature he was convinced that I could be of no real
competition for him.

Without a moment’s hesitation, I summoned my Self, got into the circle and without the flinch of an eye, the shot was released and soared past his mark, impressing the coach and earning me a place on the track and field team instantly. What a great day was that, I went in one, from being the average academic student to being a track star and major player on the track team.
