Are blocks really the best toy advancement in this millennium?
I know that it’s very rare to see blocks around these days, heck, I would be surprised to see legos anymore. And in a way, I think that it’s a sad thing, that kids can’t get the experience. Not only that, but blocks have a very unique world view that is rarely seen today, and I believe would really help the youth of today.
I know I know that everyone has different world views, but what are some things that Americans “value” (at least to the extent that they don’t get called commies)? Well freedom of speech is one of them. Now look at a block, it may be plain, it may have pictures it may have letters or even words on the sides. Now don’t tell me that a block that says “a g t y”, the color red, and a picture of a sheep doesn’t have freedom of speech.
Secondly, everyone is told at youth that everyone is created equal, whether by parents, teacher, the constitution said it for crying out loud. Next, look at a block again, or even better, a whole box of blocks. Blocks are essentially the same. Blocks have 6 sides usually, most in a set will have the same size, but then you look closer, and notice a chip on one corner, a scrape across one side, and of course the various free speeches of the blocks themselves. Although they differ slightly physically, and widely in opinion, they have a degree of equality, and were meant to be equal, why do you think we call all of them blocks?
And finally blocks spark creativity like nothing else can. Sure anyone can build a submarine out of legos, but blocks, that takes an entirely different skill set. The message here is that anything you strive for just might be possible. Like a giraffe, how many people have actually tried to build a giraffe out of blocks, it might be tough, but when you do it, it’s so much more satisfying.
So hopefully that way of the block is clearer to you now, and parents, studies show that the simpler that a child’s toys are, the more likely they will succeed.
