One of my Street Smart friend told me this story with worthy tips. It has helped me to express myself properly, what and what not to expect from people & how to get people to be on your side.

Once an artist painted a beautiful painting of the Rising Sun; so good, so realistic that one would easily get immersed in it, tempted to meditate, to hear the singing of birds.  No doubt, it was absolutely flaw less. He took the painting to his mentor.  The mentor praised the painting a lot.

With praises from mentor, our artist got carried away. He took the painting to the King, hoping he would get rewards and money. The King also liked the painting and rewarded him with a bag full of gold coins. Boastful he was, he thought no one on earth could point a flaw in painting. He decided to display the painting at busy corner of the street for a day. He did, along with a note saying: Put a cross mark where you feel there’s a flaw or else sign in the appreciation notebook. The artist thought when his mentor certified it as flaw less, how a lay man could find a flaw?  Thus he was least expecting a single cross mark. But when he went to collect the painting next morning he was shocked that there were hundreds of cross marks on the painting and not a single signature in appreciation book. His masterpiece was spoilt and his ego crashed in a day.

Disappointed & depressed he showed the painting to his mentor and told him what had happened. Crying, he cursed himself that he was no good. The mentor consoled him and asked the artist to make another painting, exactly the same, a replica of this one. Artist could not understand the intentions of mentor. But, as advised, he made another painting exactly a replica and took it to mentor.

Now, the mentor advised him to display this replica at the same corner again for a day, but with a note saying that whoever feels there be any flaw in the painting, should correct it there & then using the paints and brushes kept there. If the observer doesn’t find any flaws, then he should sign the appreciation notebook.

Anticipating that there would be hundreds of corrections in his painting, a little nervous and a little excited, our artist went to collect it the next morning. He was surprised to see that there was not a single correction but had hundreds of appreciation signatures.

Moral of story:  Never let some one to pin point your mistakes instead request them to rectify  the mistakes if they find any. Every one considers themself smart and are eager to point out mistakes of others, give free suggestions without having any real knowledge of the subject.

Nice story.I love the sunset picture, but i dont think it is a painting? Is it??

  • Street Smart on May 3, 2009

Thanks Jasmine. No, its not a painting, the story is a work of fiction, so the picture is just a sunset picture that adds onto the story. If you click on the ‘image source’, you can see the website from where the picture is taken.

This is such a beautiful story and with a great lesson. Now im never going to forget this, and i’ll try not to be like the artist. I judge a lot of my acts and depend my joys, sccess and failues on what people say. I think i better not do this anymore.

Thanx a lot. This will help.

It’s always so easy to point out someones flaws or mistakes or misgivings, that’s part of our human condition. To be great is to compliment people for their works and efforts in life, especially for the masterpieces one creates. Critisicsm is all part of self expression but the critics have to know what their looking at before they critique…..you make a very well made point and it is wonderfully written. Good Job!
