This is about how an ethnographer observes and writes.

My phone rang and the very next second I knew, it was Kelly who would be asking me about the resort information she had asked me to look into earlier and the arrangements when they landed in Carmel city. At the very first step, it seemed my Irish friend Kelly planned her marriage with her boy friend Gabriel long back when I had spoken about Carmel City being famous for weddings and lovers. The Carmel city hotels have always been spoken of with great respect, the cozy inns with ocean view. The beautiful sunset along the coast-side seemed amazing.

I had plenty of time by the time Kelly arrived. Everyone seemed very happy. Happy dogs, happy children were all I could see. Happy dogs because no rule of leash and children because they had nothing to worry about. I saw more porpoises and sea otters than I had been here last time. The best work I always loved to see in the Carmel Beach located at Highway 1 are the sculptures made out of sand. Even till today, I never understood how much it takes for an artist to make such great sculptures.

The bench along the coast-line was occupied by two old men, I guessed in their sixties, spoke about the remodeling of the ancient cobbled buildings from bohemian past to modern inns, their part in conservation of the culture and also to maintain that state of following the literary art, houses in Carmel city do not seem to possess address or door numbers. The beach had everything happening from kids playing to weddings on the other side mostly at the Carmel River state beach and paradise and many other locations at affordable prices starting from just $200. I collected this information for Kelly. Just then, I enquired with the Carmel Wedding office people while I could see young couple walking hand-in-hand with flowers all over the white sand. Just then, McFarland, the founder of this official wedding planner assisted me in informing about the wedding details. So, be it a simple ceremony in the beach with  beautiful sunset or in the church or even surrounded by the cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean, the wedding ceremony would be dealt with in a systematic way wherein the couples would only feel less stressed. It all seemed romantic, everyone lively with any sort of activity.

I forgot to inform my mother that I would be in the beach because I knew their stroll meant being here. Just then, my eyes looked at everyone around me, cornering a woman of my mother’s age seemed to be writing about something, maybe as I am observing, she must be a writer or working with arts related stuff because I heard long ago that Carmel Beach is a festive place for artists, be it for the composer, writer or a musician.

Perhaps, if I was one among them busy with my niece, I wouldn’t even have noticed ethnographers as they are called, observing without one’s knowledge. Of course, that’s what their profession is all about. They can hear people speaking from topics regarding tournaments to weddings and the night life buzz, though nothing much happens here in Carmel City. I didn’t understand the way in which addresses are mentioned in Carmel city. The houses have names not numbers or addresses as mentioned earlier. As of in beach, I didn’t understand the language in which a group of people spoke while I was sitting in the beach. It sounded like Greek and Latin for me. I could barely understand here and there.
