I have tried on many occasions, remembering the joys of childhood cinema, to decide which cartoon character made the biggest impression upon me, but the truth is I just cannot choose.

If I am forced, at 60, to say who my absolute favorite cartoon character is then it has got to be a split vote, because I remember spending my entire childhood, from maybe five to ten years of age, glued to the cinema seat every Saturday morning, enraptured and made to laugh, fit ti bust, by the antics on screen of Bugs Bunny, Wlie E Coyote and Roadrunner.
Those were the days, wrinklies to the front, when you would get your sixpence pocket money on the Saturday morning, and with it you not only paid your admission to the picture-house, but could buy some sweets as well! Sixpence in old money was the equivalent of 2.5 pence today, so you can appreciate how long ago this was, but that is the beauty of these cartoon characters. They are truly ageless.

Bugs Bunny was, and is, the famous rabbit which starred in cartoons produced by Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies film studios, appearing in almost 200 animated cartoons, as well as in films like Roger Rabbit. One of the most recognizable cartoon characters on the planet, Bugs has been around since 1940, and, along with Mickey Mouse, became one of the first cartoon characters to feature on a pavement star,on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a world-renowned stretch of pavement.
Bugs Bunny was made, In 1997, the subject of a US postage stamp, ranked 7th in the most popular US postage stamps of al time. Even today, this frolicsome rabbit is seen as the mascot for Warner Brothers studios, just as Mickey Mouse is for Disney. This hilarious and cheeky chappie kept us rolling in the aisles as kids, and still makes me chuckle today.

On a par with Bugs, though, has to be the incredible Roadrunner and his hapless pursuer, Wilie E Coyote. None of us kids could contain ourselves on Fridays, wondering if the useless hunter would finally catch his elusive prey the next day, but of course he never did. It was animation director Chuck Jones, of the ACME corporation, who dreamed up this lightning-fast runner, speeding along US highways, in 1948, writers T Pierce and M Jones creating the coyote character.

Today, we all know that that the chase represented by this pair is really the eternal quest by man to find and catch his perfect woman, but as kids nothing of the kind occurred to us, too wrapped up in the hopeless confidence of the determined coyote, against the clever ingenuity of the Road Runner, a very unequal fight that had us all in stitches every time we saw it.
It seems incredible today to think that the last showing of Road Runner on CBS television was in 1968, after which Bugs Bunny took over the slot, because these cartoons are as fresh and funny today as they always were. No matter how hard I try, when it comes down to selecting an all-time favorite between these two, I simply cannot do it, because they gave, and still give me pleasure in equal, copious amounts.
