Some thoughts I had when I watched the news this morning, I was surprised at how emotional I felt about the news that Obama had been elected President (considering I am not even American)!

I just want to offer my congratulations to the American people, those I may know and those I don’t. Congratulations! I know perhaps some people reading this may have voted for the republicans but congratulations anyway for this is such a momentous event it has even touched my heart and almost brought a tear of joy and pride to my hard hearted and cynical eye.

To tell you the truth I was a bit sick listening to news and reading about the American election. Commentators over here kept banging on about how important it was not just for America but for the world and for us; I personally have always felt that it doesn’t really matter what Prime minister we have or what President of America there is I have always been poor and I have always been struggling just to make ends meet.  My circumstances have never changed because of who is in power.

However this morning I woke up to the news that Obama was to be President of the United States and I felt such a sense of lightness in my heart, you’d almost think I’d become American just for the day because  I also want to celebrate. I see this handsome man and his lovely family on my television screen and I can’t help thinking he will make America the country I once admired so much when I was so much younger and so less cynical.

I couldn’t help feeling he will make all the things that have gone so desperately wrong right. I may be getting carried away with the enthusiasm of this historic event, but sometimes change and enthusiasm can make a big difference. It is what galvanises us into making positive changes and America and the world needs change.  So I feel moved to congratulate the American people, this feels like a new beginning for them and for the rest of us as well. Heartiest Congratulations

He won’t make it all better. But he’ll make a LOT of it better, and in so doing, he’ll make us a better people. Unlike certain current presidents and their cronies.

Well, yes, yes, yes – but recall all the excitement and hope when Tony Blair was elected – and contrast with his standing a few years later. Is this the result of politicians being uncovered or of a fickle electorate? Or is it essential that to get to the top of the greasy pole there is quite a lot of grease around.
    We shall see….
