Sometimes we want to pray but cannot gather words we want to say. Or, for some, they may not feel like praying. Here is a suggestion that can be tried how to count our blessings. As hymn-writer Johnson Oatman, Jr. wrote: “count your blessings, name them one by one…”.
It is normal and a common fact how our daily lives are extremely focused on our everyday worries and concerns. Yet, no matter how embedded our problems and challenges are, it is amazing how we can also get carried away when we begin saying out loud what we are thankful for. Right away our focus shifts from our problems to God’s graciousness, his promises and love.
It is a personal matter what we want to thank God for. Here are three strategies that cover about everything when we thank God for our blessings. By focusing on them – looking up, looking within, and looking around – we can count our blessings with specific personal list of gratitude to the gifts and graces from God each day.
Looking Up
Looking Within
Looking Around
Looking Up – how about thanking God for his wonderful creations we benefit from, for his guidance that provides direction, for loving us despite our sinfulness, and more…
Looking Within – how about breaking down and thanking God for all that our senses can do, for our pleasures and achievements, for our challenges that humble us, for our minds that create and develop new ideas, and more…
Looking Around – how about for our food, clothing and shelter, for our families and friends, for our community and country, for helping others and vice-versa, and more…
The list is endless. Let us count our blessings and be grateful for what God has done!
Happy Thanksgiving!
