Have you ever been so in love that your daily breath depended upon one another?
Have you ever been pushed to unfathomable limits just to defend your beliefs?
Have you ever been made to feel like the underbelly of society?
Have you ever been thirteen?

Well I have…and this is my story.

Davison Library would like to share with you books that you may want to check out that you might not otherwise ever hear of.  I will bring you works from authors that might only be heard of in a small location or perhaps maybe not at all.  These authors are the equivalent of the underground rap stars trying to reach you the audience and entertain you as much or more than the authors that everyone has heard of.

I would like to share with you a teaser from a title called “The Gifted Ones,” A Memoir by Lisa Vaughn.

Have you ever been so in love that your daily breath depended upon one another?

Have you ever been pushed to unfathomable limits just to defend your beliefs?

Have you ever been made to feel like the underbelly of society?

Have you ever been thirteen?

Well I have…and this is my story.

Raised in a Catholic-based household in the Midwest - the year was 1976, and life as I knew it was about to change forever.

The next six years would prove to be a rollercoaster of survival for two determined teenagers, being thrust into a full-fledged, fight-for-your-life, adult existence – fueled by an overpowering mother and a closed-minded society – all in the name of L-O-V-E.

Teaser 1st chapter:

It was as if a freight train had hit me. That’s the only feeling I remember. Within a fraction of a second, I felt as if I couldn’t breathe, could possibly pass out…or just die.

I was home, killing time upstairs in my room, like your typical teenager. My dad was also home, so it must’ve been a weekend. My name echoed from the bottom of the stairs, summoning me to the kitchen table. If only I knew then what I would soon come to know, I would’ve jumped out my bedroom window and never looked back. Caught completely off guard, like a lamb being led to slaughter, totally unaware of the shit storm ahead, I be-bopped down the staircase, as my mom gestured for me to take a seat, which I did voluntarily. Seemingly, out of nowhere, something flew from behind me – over the top of my head, practically grazing my skull. A dull thud diverted my attention as “it” plopped directly in front of me, landing on the kitchen table. Taking a few minutes to focus, I began to digest what I was seeing. I think my heart started pounding a few seconds before my brain told me what I saw.
