An economic argument for the negation of deepwater offshore oil drilling.

Deep Sea Oil Drilling is economically not optimal.

Of course, there is the risk of Oil Spills. According to the Associated Press, “BP has already shelled out $9.5 billion in cleanup costs, and the company has promised to set aside another $20 billion for a victims compensation fund. The company could face tens of billions of dollars more in government fines and legal costs from hundreds of pending lawsuits.” There are several better alternatives, such as the Bakken Formation in North Dakota. According to the USGS, it contains up to 500 billion barrels. In contrast, Saudi Arabia, the country with most reserves, only has 267 billion barrels. Although not all of it is recoverable with current technology, it is still a massive amount. In addition, it has little risk of damaging the surrounding ecosystem, due to the bareness of North Dakota.
