My views on Deja-vu the accepted theories and beyond.

Déjà-vu means already seen if translated from French literally, or its called “Paramnesia” from the Greek language, its also called “Promnesia”  These words all translate into human terms as an experience we feel sure we have experienced previously.

The term Déjà-vu was first used by a French psychics researcher named “Emile Boirac” in his book “LAvenir Des Sciences Psychicques translated means “The Future of Science Psychics” Emile found the essence of Deja-vu to be an anomaly in the brain, when Deja-vu is experienced it is usually accompanied by the feelings of weirdness or extreme familiarity.

Experiments were carried out in the late 20th century by psychological experts, who tried to recreate Deja-vu in laboratory conditions.  The experience of Deja-vu or “Precognition” could not be reproduced.  The Precognition theory is that Deja-vu is not a chemical imbalance in the brain, it is in-fact the future being recalled!

Another well thought of theory is that Deja-vu is caused by the distance between our eyes and an object, as we have Binocular vision, I.e. two eyes focusing on the same object.  The minute difference between the eyes, causes a time difference of the picture received by the brain, I.e. your right eye may see an object before your left eye?  As we know the brain sorts out inputs from our senses for our conscious visions.  Whether they be through smell, touch, sound, or sight.  The brain sub consciously sees an object before it translates it for us into an order of recognition.  So when our conscious mind sees the object in question we have a feeling of Deja-vu! Because the brain has already seen it.

There has been much research carried out on the amount of our brain we actually use?  For a long time scientists have claimed we use only 10% of our brain capacity.  More recently research has been aided by technology I.e. brain scans and the ability to measure electrical activity in the brain.  Scientists now prefer the percentage of 50/60% of brain capacity is used.

Severely brain damaged patients are forced by nature to use sections of their brain that have possibly been dormant before.  Nature is surely the most diverse scientist of them all!  These unfortunate patients have a heightened sense of Deja-vu, now is that because of brain damage or they are forced to use a section of the brain which can see into the future or into the past?  That theory is a long shot but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Really interesting article – I\’ve encountered de ja vu several times before.. but the time that sticks out most in my mind, is when I visited Harrogate for the first time.

I was walking down a street, and I suddenly felt like I had been there before. I even said to my partner at the time, at the end of this street there is an antique shop, and in the window there will be a large blue charger in the centre display.

Sure enough, we walked to the end of the street and there was the antique shop, and in the centre of the window display – there was the large blue charger!

    Really weird experience!

Well done research on an interesting topic.

I had lots of similar experiences. Maybe we existed before? If we uncover the reason behind then we can probably predict the future. No more surprises then. :-)
