Accidents happen anywhere and anytime. Will you help them if it happens in front of you?
Six months ago, I was driving a car in Jakarta alone on my way back home. When I drove my car across the main road slowly but sure, suddenly a motorbike driving at a high speed passed in front of my car. The driver of the motorbike did not realize that there were some blocks in the middle of the main road to split the road into two ways. As a result, he crashed into the blocks, hit the hot and hard asphalt, and fell down next just next to my car. I was so shocked that I stopped my car in just a second, and I thought I hit the driver. In fact, I did not hit the motorbike, and it was not my fault. The first reaction that I had was to help the driver and ask if he was fine; however, since many people saw the accident and started to surround the area, I was very scared and nervous. Since Indonesians always blame a person who drives in the car as a scapegoat even if that is not his fault, I became nervous and afraid. Consequently, I made a quick decision and escaped from that place. I had to escape because I did not know what the crowd would do to me as a scapegoat. I heard one time before that they had physically harassed and judged the person who drove the car as that was his fault even though the police were not involved. Furthermore, I was a girl and alone in the car. I had no idea what would have happened to me if I had stopped the car and helped the driver. Although somehow I felt guilty by leaving the victim on the road without knowing his condition, I felt lucky that I could escape and probably save my life because I did not want to hurt myself for something that was not my mistake.
