A script I wrote about that scene.
Dr Guarino Sequence Script
(We see a plane on an airport ready to take off. The scene switches to Charlie in a private part of the plane alone. He is sitting quietly by himself with an uneasy look on his face. A stewardess comes in.
Stewardess: Sir, the plane is about to take off, do you need help with your seat belt?
Charlie: No, I’ll just leave it off
Stewardess: Sorry sir it’s regulations, here let me help you (Stewardess moves to help)
Charlie: Wait, um ok. (Look of terror is on his face. He reluctantly closes his eyes and has a flashback to when he was a young boy.)
(We see two adults with a young boy. The two adults look stressed while the boy stands aimlessly.)
Rose: Come on Matt, we’re going to be late for the appointment. Check Charlie and make sure his shoes are done and his buttons are done up.
Matt: Will you calm down? It’s not like it’s going to do anything (Look of shock on rose)
Rose: Matt! He’s going to be normal, whatever we have to do, whatever it costs.
(An overhead camera shot of them on a bus to the office. They sit in silence until they reach the office. They quickly head in with Matt carrying Charlie along.)
Dr Guarino: Well, well, well, so this is Charlie. We’re going to be friends.
Rose: Can you do anything for him doctor?
Dr Guarino: Nothing is guaranteed. But you must give the treatment a chance, otherwise you’re better off not starting at all. Now if you’ll just step outside and let me examine the boy. (Parents leave and Guarino leads Charlie to a leather table. He straps Charlie to the table.
Charlie: Maaaa!
Dr Guarino: She’s outside. Don’t worry, Charlie. This won’t hurt a bit
Charlie: Want Ma!
(Guarino starts a machine, with many lights. It makes a loud noise like a plane. Charlie starts to scream but Guarino puts a wad of cloth in his mouth.)
Dr Guarino: Now, now, Charlie. None of that. You be a good little boy. I told you, it won’t hurt.
(The machine continues to make a loud noise. Charlie has a look of terror on his face before he faints from terror. Black for a few scenes, then he wakes unstrapped
Dr Guarino: Now that didn’t hurt a bit, did it?
Charlie: n-no… (They head back out to the parents. Rose sees that Charlie has wet himself and is at once both embarrassed and disgusted)
Rose: Charlie! What did you do?
Dr Guarino: Just an accident, Mrs Gordon. He got a bit scared but don’t punish him or he will connect coming here with punishment. (Mrs. Rose still has a look of disgust)
Matt: Are you sure that this will work? Ten dollars is a lot of-
Rose: Matt, it’s your own child. Dr Guarino can make him normal like other kids. (Matt sighs and pulls out his wallet but Dr Guarino looks away embarrassed)
Dr Guarino: Please, just pay the receptionist. See you later Charlie. (The three head home arguing about money and making Charlie normal. They arrive at home still fighting and Charlie heads to a corner in the kitchen and is moaning and trembling while being ignored and needing changing.
Matt: I could have used the money we spent on Charlie for something useful like my own business. You constantly criticize me for not wanting to spend money
Rose: You don’t care. You just don’t care about your son
Matthew: The hell with you. Now I know who’s the dope. Me! For putting up with you. (Storms out)
