My good deed of the day which felt mighty good!
Today is Tuesday, March 1 and I did a very good deed for the day…whatever possessed me I don’t know but it felt damn good!
I was at Dunkin’ Donuts getting my french vanilla coffee and toasted sesame bagel with a little butter (as they look at me like I’m freaking crazy when I tell them NOT to drown my bagel in butter) as this woman was paying for her coffee using her DD card , which by the way, the card kept failing when they swiped it. I hate those damn cards they always fail to swipe when you’re down to your last three bucks! So the woman tries another card and it also fails to swipe but the manager was very nice because when she handed him her coffee back, he actually told her to take the coffee and just come back and pay later.
She refused and they tried once again to swipe that stupid Dunkin’ Donut card….when it failed again, I just reached into my wallet while waiting for my ‘dark’ french vanilla coffee (again they stare at me when I actually want coffee with my milk and ask for my coffee a little dark, like my Puertorican skin, LOL) so I reach in for a five dollar bill and tell the woman, “here, coffee’s on me today”…she was shocked, perhaps embarrassed, said no to me and I insisted and gave her the money and said, “don’t worry about it, this is my good deed for the day.”
Honestly, I believe she was more shocked that a stranger offered to pay for her coffee. I mean, who does that nowadays? I sure don’t! But at that moment, at that particular time while my mind was on my personal problems, thinking about what lay ahead of me at work and how the price of gas was escalating…all I thought about was, if that were me what would I do? I didn’t think about it, I didn’t even put a dollar amount on it, I just DID what I wanted at that moment because it felt right.
Wow! I’ve done a lot of good things in my life but that small ‘five dollar’ gesture made me smile all the way to work. I’m sure she had a good story to share either with her coworkers or family but I’m glad I was part of her story and I’m glad I have some good in me which randomly pops out and makes me the kind of person that I am.
So to all the coffee drinkers out there! slow down, pace yourself and do a good deed once in awhile for someday, you will get it back tenfold.
Life is good and as America runs on Dunkin Donuts coffee….I run on just being me.
