It is Sunday and once again the day for my blog.Today I will be discussing about endangered sea animals and what we can do to help. Let’s start off with some more popular sea animals, like the sea lion. It lives in Open Ocean and low rocky outcrops. It is threatened by commercial fishing, drowning in nets, and deliberate killing by fishermen. The next one is sea turtles. The nesting habitats of all the species of sea turtles are destroyed. This is a big problem because the nesting period is a dangerous time for turtles, eggs, and hatchlings. But, there are other threats like raccoons; who are the severest predators of eggs. This one is the blue whale. It is thought to be the largest animal to inhabit the earth. The population has been severely depleted in the southern hemisphere by whaling; the population is 10% less. There are only 10,000 humpback whales left worldwide, which is only about 8% of its estimated initial population. The gray whale, it is the only living member of the baleen whale family. They are almost extinct because of the use of harpoon guns and factory ships. But, the numbers have been increasing slowly because of the ban on commercial whaling. People have hunted whales for centuries. They have been eaten and used as carvings. Commercial whaling, though, is the real culprit for increasing extinction. Factory ships with sonar, helicopters, and explosive harpoon guns are all part of the commercial whaling, so whales are doomed. The giant otter is another endangered sea animal. It lives in lakes, slow-moving forested rivers, creeks, reservoirs, and swamps. The main threat to this great animal is fur trading by humans, fishermen, poisoning through gold mining operations, habitat loss, and disturbance of waterways by boaters. Hunters have cut so deeply into the population that the animal is nearly extinct. But, the trading of otter pelts has been banned. However, the illegal hunting still continues. This is all for today. I hope you learned a lot about how you can help the environment by telling your friends and family and maybe even donating to sites to help these animals. |
