Epic vs. Modern Hero
Today’s modern heroes are our Hollywood stars and radio bands. An occasional writer or professional athlete may be named as a hero as well. We find the hero specific to ourselves, the one that we can relate to. Heroes are personal and specific for each individual’s personality. They are used for inspiration and guidance in the daily challenges encountered. In the days of Achilles, a hero had very dissimilar characteristics with the ones found today. Despite Achilles’ many heroic characteristics, the epic hero would not be one in a modern world due to his traits fitting into a past world, no longer existing enemies, and the new disadvantage in the technologically advanced modern warfare.
They became our heroes when we heard their song, or saw them in a movie that we liked. They impressed us with their fame and fortune, two things many people are striving to achieve today. Born into families having the least bit of nobility, they are raised as average children. Growing up in a city, farm, town, or any other place where they lead a normal life. They achieve their fame from their distinguishable and unique talents and abilities.
Thom Yorke, singer from the band Radiohead, was born in England. Coming from a family like any other, Thom gained fame from what started as an unheard band made of friends from school. Through his singing talents he slowly but surely climbed the ladder of fame to a high rung. He led his band-mates with him to this rung of international fame and recognition. By being unique and different, by creating a new genre of rock, and by adapting to the modern market, Radiohead has become a great and world famous band.
The epic hero has qualities of a past world, a world long gone; a world where war was common and great fighters were prized. These warriors held the fate of a country in their hands. They were a great people born from immortal gods and royalty. Their courageous acts defined them. Who they are and their traits reflect important ideals of their culture. Fighting the evil of the world, they encountered mystical, supernatural, and beastly creatures from the corners of the lands and the depths of the sea.
