Achilles, son of Peleus and Thetis, was the greatest warrior in his day. His homeland, Greece begins a war with Troy and he is asked to fight. The Greeks know they need Achilles to take the upper hand in the battle with Troy and without him they are much weaker. He possesses superhuman strength and immortality throughout his body with the exception of his heels where he was held by when dipped by his mother for immortality and power. Achilles challenges the greatest warrior of Troy, Hector. Achilles turns out victor in the battle and kills Hector, weakening the moral of Troy.
These two types of heroes have many different contradicting traits much due to the time periods of their lives. Achilles had become a hero for what he did in battle, something that was looked at as heroic his day and brought him fame. Thom Yorke, a modern hero, is a man who achieved his fame from being unique in the repetitive world of music. Although they have many different traits, they both achieved fame from their actions throughout their lives. Fame did not come to them from birth, rather they acquired it from what they did.
Due to today’s technological advances, modern warfare would not be so dependent on the strength of men, giving Achilles an average indispensability. Much of Achilles fame was brought on with his accomplishments on the battle field, losing this could mean his chance of being a hero low for today’s standards.
Although both heroes have very different features, they both are important to their followers and fans. Being a hero involves overcoming many difficulties and challenges. It also means being a positive role model to many. As well as having to meet and overcome the opposition in rising to fame. Rising above the competition, a hero defines himself as one by accomplishing above average goals set by him/her for the good of others.
