Yes, confidence and a good eye contact are the basic elements of victory in an extempore, or any other stage presentation for that matter. but let us jump to some other more useful tips.
AN EXTEMPORE IS WON WHEN YOU KEEP IN MIND THOSE ATTRIBUTES OF YOUR SPEECH WHICH ARE CONSIDERED BY JUDGES TO MARK YOU ON.
TIP1 : COMPACTNESS : let me tell you what would happen if u don’t condense your speech. you will run out of time before enumerating your points. in general, people who already have had mastered fluency and language try to expand on single points. this may prove to be fatal because usually in a minute’s time, there is a physical constraint in trying doing so. instead, try to bullet fire multiple points and in doing so, practice :
TIP 2 : TRANSITION : jumping from one point to another may be tricky. it is more so , when the two points are world apart but you don’t have any other middle path point to get around this tricky transition. in such a situation, try taking a pause followed by ” Why don’t we take this to another level” or ” lets change our perspective and consider this : “. directly yet indirectly you are telling audience to leave the past points and brace themselves for a fresh perspective
TIP 3 : NO “YOU’s” and even lesser ” I ’s ” : in general, the topics in an extempore are very generic. you needn’t get personal with them, something which people instinctively resort to due to lack of knowledge. think about it, what would you say if you are out of content and yet are forced to keep speaking. you turn to your personal memories translating to ” I’s “, or try talking to audience on a personal level “You’s” . Don’t even think about it. the whole point of an extempore is to test your general knowledge about things and being diverse and yet being concise about things.
TIP 4 :FACT-FULL SPEECH : its the right time to show off your general knowledge. the speech should be full of examples, situations, facts , numbers, names, you get the point. this not only shows your conviction but has a psychological impact on judges leaving an impression of your smartness. however, there is a suggestion. try sounding more human when quoting facts. don’t sound like a “fact-machine”. use it in a way that polishes your point. for example, you could project a fact this way : “ IF THOSE 1900 DEATHS DO NOT ALARM YOU , WHAT WILL TO CONSERVE YOUR ENVIRONMENT “. observe that in this one, you blended a fact in the flow of your speech and not steer away from the natural flow.
TIP 5 : END IT LIKE AN OPERA : I’m talking about grandeur. you must have heard how audience always remembers two things in a presentation : beginning and ending. actually it also takes away the style from your act, but hardly the content. although, since I’m talking about extempore here, we are more concerned about judges who also are conscious about the content. but this does not change the fact that a theatrical ending is unmatched in leaving an impact, on audience and judges alike. end it with a piece of thought or a classic line such as ” MY SPEECH ENDS BUT NOT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO THINK ABOUT IT ” . these lines really set you apart from the usual confused endings. a good ending also marks your confidence in what all you said. you might have excellently put across your points, but a bad ending destroys the impression of your conviction in what all you said. you don’t want that do you?
HAVING TALKED ABOUT A CLASSY ENDING OF THE SPEECH , LEMME END THIS ARTICLE WITH A CLASSY SUGGESTION . if you are getting up on the stage just for fun ,it’s different. do anything you will and i say it straight from my heart when i say it’s much better that way. but if you are keen on winning a position in it, DON’T THINK ABOUT THE AUDIENCE AS RECEPTORS OF YOUR ACT BUT THE JUDGES. in the case otherwise, you will fall in a flow which will take away objectivity out of your speech and you might fare low on the key things you are judged on . i.e content, preciseness, and fact-full speech.
All the best
