Is the arrogance of big time celebrities worse for our nation than species becoming endangered or the effects of global warming? In some ways, I believe it is.

Sadly, I remain a part of the egotistical masses otherwise known as a hypocrite. I spent $10 to see the opening of Inglorious Basterds. I will probably spend $14 on the new Muse album to amp up my Ipod. And I drive a Hyundai SUV which maintains a steady $40 refill every five days…so yeah, I could stop the vicious cycle and give the money I spend on margaritas to the beautiful polar bears of Alaska. But then who will save the pandas of China? Or the koalas of Australia? Will an athlete from the New York Yankees who earns $30 million a year to play baseball tell me I can help the insects of the rain forest we gave up our electricity for a month? Because heaven forbid we neglect our entertainment budget to pamper their salary. The thought of how easy it would be for just one team to donate their earnings for one year…”Hi, we’re the San Antonio Spurs and upon our departure from Ethiopia, we left the people their as full of resources as our political agenda for doing so”. “Tonight on Dateline, how Tom Cruise graciously donated his earnings for two films that garnered enough food for South Africa that every child is now enrolled in South Africa University, thinking of new and ingenious ways to pay it forward.” “This is Katie Couric and I’m reporting to you live and free of charge from the streets of New Orleans. I told CBS to extricate my final year of my contract in order to better the living conditions of those in need!” Sounds like…a simple plan? Perhaps cutting on the rich makes me feel better, but it certainly doesn’t counsel the ones who don’t have computers. Or parents. Or homes.

Alas, even in this dire economy we’ve stumbled into, there is always another option. Depend on yourself and not others to embark upon the inevitable, impossible task of “digging up”. Simply earn enough money to buy an island or rock out an amazing video. Of course you risk Kanye ruining another richer white girls accomplishments. But in the long run, its better than being poor.

Or being born a polar bear.
