A Review on Tom Johns.
Though Henry Fielding is an 18th century novelist, he had within him a pulse comparable with modern times. His outlook is far more in advance to the social environment to which he belonged. In ‘Tom Johns, Fielding displays a comprehensive replica of the social swings, twists and even turmoil, capturing them afresh from their habitat and presenting them encrusted with a tint of satirist salt. This enabled him to discover a new genus of humorous yet philosophical pragmatism. He meticulously studied his age and in this regard his experience over two decades as dramatist, essayist, and as a pamphlet writer facilitated him. It is rather predictable that the consciousness he generated through his intense social involvement and activism is in evidence in ‘Tom Jones’ Thus he could present the prevailing Anglican social scenario to the Universe. He was endowed with a brand new sarcastic wisdom which he utilized with great precision to draw a social cross-section of his times.
Contrary to the tradition and tendencies of the highly conservative times to which he belonged he was adequately audacious to choose as his hero, a man of unknown and mysterious origin. He conferred a comic rendering and easygoing sarcastic approach in his account and he was acting as though he was withholding his own view point, though it, ultimately turned out to be a tool utilized most effectively towards prolific social criticism. The hero was an excellent individual. But his origin anonymous. Irrespective of his merits, the society was unwilling to acknowledge him. The social standing was the factor which reckon. But Fieldings’ Tom didn’t seem to bother . Added to his advantage was that he was disconcerted about himself. Bestowed with might and fervor, he steadfastly fought his way out.
