If I were a boxer, I would knock out my opponent using my gloved fists.
If I were a wrestler, I would grapple my opponent down to the ground and make him submit through my armlock.
If I were a fencer, I would bash my opponent until he quits fighting.
I may not be a boxer, a wrestler or a fencer, but I am fully cognizant of the violence that these sports expose to players.
Playing with this violence may be a bad thing. In one of the fights for example, a player may bite off his opponent’s ear, inadvertently pierce his skin, or break a femur.
And this is where the fun and action starts.
Yes, violence is the expression of physical or verbal force against self or other, compelling action against one’s will on pain of being hurt.
However, when violence arises, the rules and regulations enter to provide the needed restraining order. They have been created to control the game and for the players to learn playing fairly.
Violators who compete way beyond the rules of the sport are given appropriate penalty.
Violence is also the inert character that put the game of Airsoft into question. Many people see risks in every pull of the trigger and shot guns inside the warfare zone.
But the way I see it, players intentionally aim their rivals in order to gain control and win the game. Competitors accurately shoot their human targets not to inflict pain on purpose but for the goal of eliminating their rivals and boosting their chances of winning. People in this sport have agreed on common terms and rules of playing to keep the game safer, yet more engaging.
The modern gladiators of today’s sports arena each have their own weapons. May it be a replica of a gun, a wood-hard baton, or just a plain fist power, violence inflicted by these weapons may not be totally eradicated as this would also wipe out the thrill and excitement people are seeking for in a sport.
These modern “swords and shields” are not the suspects for bringing the carnage, but the ones who maneuver them. These said arsenals were not purposely made to injure a person but to test one’s skills and strength with others, thus inflicting a sense of friendship and camaraderie.
Just imagine the country if there were no sports of this kind. There will be no “Filipino Wrecking Machine”, no fun-gun shooting, no People’s champ. Ouch.
These warriors were not tasked to engage with this kind of occupation, not even to harm others. It is their sheer will and passion that push them to risk their bodies in order to climb the ladder and achieve fame and glory for their selves and the nation.
The true violence of sports lies behind the player. By the time a competitor executes his jaw-dropping and eye popping moves to someone outside the ring of the sport, aggression and hatred are exposed. Pride and glory is lost. And all are losers.
We are violent in nature. But we should not be blinded by the act of violence presented in some sports. Not all kinds of violence bring fear and hatred. In sports, it showcases the hardcore action people cheer and become proud about. It mainly delivers friendship and camaraderie, not tears and blood.
Banged up faces and broken bones may be much appreciated especially if the player grabbed his most covenant desire through his unwavering skills and undying passion for the sport.
After all, if there is no pain, there is no game.
