I procrastinate, you probably procrastinate, however how can we stop procrastinating?
.Firstly, you should try and remove any source of procrastination. This can be a hard one. Lets say that you have work that needs to be completed, however you are playing your favourite computer game and dont want to stop. To remove this temptation an easy solution would be to throw out your computer, but this isnt practical. A more clever solution would be to, say, uninstall your computer game, then reinstall it. In the couple of hours where to computer game is being reinstalled your mind (not wanting to become bored) will find the prospect of ‘work’ more appealing.
.Summarise how important what you are putting off is over what you are doing. Tell yourself, ‘my GCSE coursework is way more important than my PS3!’. This will work suprisingly well and if you try to tell yourself how the coursework is more important than the PS3.
.Get some sleep. The more tired you are, the less you want to work. Its not rocket science!
.Set goals in your work. Lets say that your work is in two sections, and you have two days to do it in. Set a goal to have the first section completed on the first day and the second section completed on the second day. For this to work, however, the goals set must not be flimsy and you should be everything you can to stick by them.
.Think over in your head what the work actually is. Often (nearly always, infact) procrastination is caused by the person finding the work overwhelming for them before even attempting it. Often going through in your head what you have to do will shrink this overwhelming task into a manageable job, and when you finish, you will say ‘that was easier than i thought!’
