What it is and why you should do it.
What is it?
Foam rolling is a type of self myofascial release technique (a form of soft tissue therapy) that is used to massage tired and tight muscles in order to increase flexibility and reduce scar tissue.
What equipment do I need to do it?
You can buy a foam roller from somewhere like Amazon for around £10. They’re usually cylindrical in shape and are often around six inches in diameter and twelve inches long. Although longer and thicker ones are used to target the back.
Tennis, softball and cricket balls are also used to target smaller muscles that are harder to reach with a bigger foam roller.
‘The Stick’ is another product used for self myofascial release technique and offer a wide range of different sized and shaped products.
Can I make my own?
Sure! You can buy PVC pipes and cut them to size or buy ones that are a few inches long. If you’re brave you won’t cover it with anything soft. If not, you can wrap it with foam insulation tape, athletic tape or improvise with any soft thick material.
How do I do it?
Use your bodyweight to squash the foam roller between your soft tissue and the floor. Slowly roll back and forth and pause and hold over any tender spots. If you wish to add more pressure, simply add more weight. You may do this by putting one leg over the other if you’re working your legs.
‘The Stick’ has handles that you can use to roll up and down your limbs.
To use the sports balls, you can either put them under your feet whilst sitting and apply more pressure by pushing your feet down. Or once you’ve worked up to it, you can lean against a wall and stand on them, with a ball under one or both feet.
