A creature awakens to humanity in the 1800s, opening it eyes to the world depicted by Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. He looks around, seeking guidance, however the one who understands him, knows of his origin, has abandoned him out of fear of his own gruesome, and hideous work. Leaving with only a coat, Victor Frankenstein’s monster leaves his apartment as innocent and untouched as a child, forced to live life as a hideous and unwanted being; the same monster that will find itself have killed his creator, his creator’s family, and soon afterwards, himself. Entering life as a benevolent creature, the tragic abuse he receives from society leaves him with deep gashes in his hope and innocence, pushing him to the emotional limits until it is evil.

After the awakening, it was obvious that Victor Frankenstein had no doubt created a benevolent creature who, like a new born child, craved guidance and acceptance. While on his difficult journey to understand humanity, he notices that people who live in a nearby cottage he has been observing appear sad (p. 99). Upon noticing their emotional pain, he sympathizes with them and displays a desire to understand their sadness, never before having seen emotional pain. He analyzes this and through understanding, develops true sympathy for these sad people, revealing his untouched personality. Also around the same time, he encounters his first interactions with humans, emotionally hurt for the first time when rejected by native people. The monster then decides he must impress the humans and deserve their acceptance which he seeks so strongly through the learning and understanding of their language(p. 100). This desire to impress displays a reserved and compassionate nature. Without any guidance or influence, he attempts to be accepted through peaceful manners revealing a very kind and gentle personality. Subsequent interactions with society show obvious reticence and a strong craving to become a friend rather than an enemy.

As this creature is rejected by more and more of society in response to his hideous and intimidating appearance, he encounters great changes in emotion and feelings toward humanity. Creating strong risk to be accepted peacefully, he ventures out to the blind De Lacey, whose children return only minutes later and force him to leave(p.121). The creature could have easily resisted, but leaves due to intense emotional pain and anguish. This important event signals a change has occurred within the monster’s mentality and view of humans and consequently, his creator. Only a little while later, does he his pain become much more obvious when he is numbed to Frankenstein’s insults(p. 88). Attempting to criticize and push him to the point in which he will leave, the monster shows no immediate reaction as if numb, showing that he has become accustomed to the biased views of humanity . In comparison his first human encounter, the monster has changed for the worst and become numb to emotional anguish. Up to this point, the monster has undergone much emotional change, and may resort to more violent demeanor.
