Freedom of Speech is not freedom to slander, nor freedom to abuse, or censor those with whom you disagree.
The first amendment of the U.S. Constitution clearly states that we, as American citizens, have the right to free speech. But free speech does not give a person the right to maliciously slander and defame those with whom you disagree. It is also not to used to promote all manner of obscene vulgarity. The founders framed this all-important part of the first amendment as a means of protecting political speech, especially unpopular political speech. It also renders a person the right to openly criticize our elected officials, without fear of reprisal. However, it seems that the idea of free speech has become perverted to the point where it has morphed into a universal endorsement of an irresponsible free-for-all, where common sense is thrown to the wind, and anything, and everything goes. This is wrong. Also wrong is the outright censorship of critical political speech that rightfully questions the nation’s elected representives’ motives, behaviors and actions. But most disturbing is the convoluted interpretation of this idea that promotes a biased attitude that favors undesirable lifestyles. For example, why is it ok for the gay community to march in the public street, promoting a controversial lifestyle, as a parading freak show, in front of impressionable young children, but speaking out against it is not? Why? Is not that protected speech? Why was ok to constantly slam George W. Bush, but don’t you dare say a thing against Barack H. Obama, for fear of being labeled a racist, or a hater? Why? Don’t I have the right to free speech? And what about the problem with outright lying on your neighbor? Why do some people believe that the first amendment gives them the right to viciously slander, and defame, ruining the reputations of those with whom they disagree, or plain dislike? But dare confront these types of individuals, and one runs the risk of being labeled an intolerant, a bigot, or hater, or some other kind of name. I like to refer to these people as clueless hypocrites. With freedom comes responsibility. The more freedom one has, the more responsibilty one has to use that freedom in a manner conducive to the betterment of all. Unfortunately, there are those that will continue to abuse the first amendment, and as such, cause others to suffer, due to their hatred, and need to control others’ thoughts, actions and beliefs.
