The simple stupid things…and yet, sometimes you have to wonder about even them. Maybe I’m just bored.

Okay, not a very pleasant topic of discussion perhaps, but when the mind questions, the mind needs answers.

I was thinking the other day about how if I leave my back door open for even just a very short period of time, it almost always seems I’ve let a fly in. Now it’s not like there are flies swarming at the door, or even that I’m aware of ever being bothered by them if I sit outside, which I do often.

So what’s the deal? Are they staking out the house and just waiting for that moment when the door opens and then they zip in?

My son-in-law, a smart fellow, answered with the fact that they have a great sense of smell; that they can pick up smells (whether something cooking on the stove or a dirty diaper) for up to two miles! Okay, so so what? I know that some flies go zipping by my face at a rapid clip, but I also know that I’ve fallen some with either a fly-swatter, a rolled up newspaper or the bottom of a shoe. So they’re not that fast! I mean if a fly was a mile away and they smelt my chili cooking, even if he flew at 60 mph, it would take him an hour to get here! And I don’t think the 60 mph part is accurate. Like I said, I don’t think they’re that fast.

Another theory is that maybe when I open the door, it creates an air current–a vacuum if you will–and it pulls them in. I don’t know.

Or is it like winning the lottery? Just the odds. Nah, seems they get in more often than I’ve ever had a winning ticket.

I’m going back to the stake-out theory. I think they have one of two of their guys posted near every door, just waiting for that right moment. But I’m open to other ideas. When the mind questions, the mind needs answers….

They bother me also. I agree with your theory. They must be waiting to gain access to you house by flying near your door. Nice article I enjoyed reading it.

Its maybe something to do with intuition. Their instincts tells them that the door is open, so they go to check if it is. They are maybe born with them..
